Pizazoo vs ScreenFloat

ScreenFloat (by indie developer Matthias Gansrigler-Hrad, on the Mac App Store since 2011) and Pizazoo both give you a searchable screenshot library on your Mac, but they start from opposite ends. ScreenFloat is capture tool and library in one app: you take the shot with ScreenFloat, it floats on screen as a reference, and it is stored in its Shots Browser. Pizazoo leaves capture to macOS or apps like CleanShot X, Shottr and Xnapper, watches the folders they save to, and sorts what lands there into categories on-device. The real question is whether you want to change how you take screenshots.

TL;DR: ScreenFloat is a Mac capture tool with its own library: it takes screenshots and recordings, floats them above your windows, and stores them with tags, folders, text search and iCloud sync between Macs ($17.99 one-time). Pizazoo does not capture. It organizes screenshots from any tool into on-device AI categories, has a free tier, and adds an iPhone and iPad app.

Pick by what your bottleneck is.

Pick Pizazoo when

  • You already capture with the macOS screenshot tool, CleanShot X, Shottr or Xnapper and want to keep doing that
  • You want screenshots sorted into categories automatically (on-device AI) instead of tagging and filing each one yourself
  • You want your library on iPhone and iPad too: the iOS app is free (iOS 17+), and Pro iCloud Sync covers Mac, iPhone and iPad
  • You want to try import, text search, categorization and markup for free before paying anything
  • You want markup tools such as watermark, signature, spotlight, magnifier and numbered steps for screenshots from any capture app

Pick ScreenFloat when

  • You want one app that takes screenshots and screen recordings (with system and microphone audio) and also stores them
  • You keep screenshots floating above other windows as references while you work; Pizazoo does not do this
  • You prefer filing by hand with tags, ratings, notes, folders and rule-based Smart Folders
  • You are on macOS 12.3 Monterey or macOS 13 Ventura (Pizazoo needs macOS 14 or later)
  • You want iCloud sync between Macs included in the base price (in Pizazoo, iCloud Sync is part of Pro)
  • You want to buy through the Mac App Store, or you already have a Setapp subscription that includes it
  • You automate with Shortcuts, AppleScript, widgets and double-click workflows on each shot

Common questions

Pizazoo vs ScreenFloat: FAQ

Is ScreenFloat a screenshot organizer or a capture tool?

Both. ScreenFloat takes screenshots and screen recordings, keeps them floating on screen, and stores every capture in its Shots Browser, where you can tag, rate, favorite, file into folders and Smart Folders, and search detected text. Pizazoo covers only the organizing half: it does not capture, it organizes what other tools save.

Can Pizazoo replace ScreenFloat?

Only if you do not rely on ScreenFloat’s capture side. Pizazoo has no screenshot capture, no screen recording and no floating shots. If what you mainly use is the Shots Browser (finding and filing old screenshots), Pizazoo covers that with automatic on-device categories and text search, and adds an iPhone and iPad app.

Can I use ScreenFloat and Pizazoo together?

Yes, with a caveat. ScreenFloat keeps captures in its own library rather than as loose files in a folder, so Pizazoo will not see them automatically. ScreenFloat can export shots to a folder you choose (including with a double-click action), and Pizazoo can watch that folder. In practice, most people will pick one of the two as their library.

Which is cheaper, ScreenFloat or Pizazoo?

ScreenFloat is $17.99 one-time for everything, including iCloud sync between Macs, after a 28-day free trial. Pizazoo is free for import, on-device text search, AI categorization and the markup editor; Pro is $15 one-time for one Mac plus one iPhone or iPad ($25 for 3, $35 for 5) and adds color tags, saved searches, unlimited custom categories and iCloud Sync. Neither requires a subscription, though ScreenFloat is also part of Setapp if you already pay for it.

Does ScreenFloat have an iPhone or iPad app?

No. Its App Store listing is Mac only, and its iCloud sync runs between Macs. It can import images from an iPhone or iPad through the Mac menu bar. Pizazoo has a free iPhone and iPad app (iOS 17+), and Pro iCloud Sync keeps screenshots, tags, custom categories and saved searches in step across Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Does ScreenFloat search the text inside screenshots?

Yes. ScreenFloat detects text, faces and barcodes in shots, and detected text is searchable in the Shots Browser and, if you turn it on, in Spotlight. Pizazoo also runs OCR on every screenshot on-device and indexes it for library-wide search. The difference is what gets searched: ScreenFloat searches shots in its own library, while Pizazoo searches whatever your capture apps save to the folders it watches.
