Where Do Screenshots Go on Mac? Find the Folder Fast
Mac screenshots save to the Desktop by default. How to check the current save location, find missing screenshots, and what iCloud Desktop changes.
By default, your Mac saves screenshots to the Desktop, as files whose names start with "Screenshot" followed by the date and time. If they are not there, the save location has been changed: press Shift-Command-5, click Options, and the item with a checkmark under Save to is where your screenshots go now. This works the same in macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS 27 (Golden Gate), and in every version back to macOS Mojave 10.14.
Where are screenshots saved on a Mac by default?
Out of the box, every screenshot you take with Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4 or the Screenshot app lands on your Desktop. That is the same on a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac or any other Mac. Apple's Take a screenshot on Mac article confirms the Desktop is the default and says you can change it in the Options menu of the Screenshot app.
A few details help when you go looking:
- The folder: the Desktop is a real folder inside your home folder (
~/Desktop). Click Desktop in a Finder window's sidebar to see your screenshots as a sortable list. - The name: filenames begin with "Screenshot" and include the date and time, and screen recordings begin with "Screen Recording" (Mac User Guide). Files made by older versions of macOS may be named "Screen Shot" (two words), so search for both.
- The format: screenshots are PNG files by default. On supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Options menu also offers an HDR capture format, which saves HEIF images instead (Apple). Search only for ".png" and you will miss those.
How do I check where my screenshots go right now?
The Screenshot app shows the current location, and the keyboard shortcuts follow the same setting.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot. You can also open it from the Utilities folder inside Applications, or find it with Spotlight.
- Click Options in the control bar.
- Look below Save to. The checked item is your current location: Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, an app such as Mail, Messages or Preview, or a folder someone picked with Other Location.
- Press Esc to close the control bar without taking a screenshot.
These steps are identical in macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS 27, per Apple's Mac User Guide. To pick a different folder, our guide to changing the screenshot location on Mac covers the Options menu, the Terminal command, and how to undo it.
What happens if Save to is set to Clipboard?
Then no file is saved at all. The screenshot goes to the clipboard, and you paste it with Command-V into a document, email or chat. Until you paste it somewhere, the clipboard is the only place that screenshot exists.
You can also send one screenshot to the clipboard without changing the setting (Apple): hold Control with the usual keys (for example, Control-Shift-Command-4), or Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. If screenshots vanish only sometimes, suspect an accidental Control key.
Where do screenshots go with Desktop & Documents in iCloud?
If Desktop & Documents Folders is turned on (System Settings, click your name, click iCloud, then Drive), your Desktop folder is stored in iCloud Drive (Apple). Screenshots still save to the Desktop, but that Desktop now syncs:
- In macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the Desktop folder appears in the Finder sidebar under Favorites, with a cloud icon next to its name. In earlier versions, it is in the iCloud section of the sidebar.
- Your screenshots show up in the Files app on iPhone and iPad (Browse, iCloud Drive, Desktop) and on iCloud.com.
- They use your iCloud storage, and deleting one on any device deletes it everywhere. Deleted files stay in Recently Deleted (in Files or on iCloud.com) for 30 days.
The confusing case is turning the feature off. Apple says your existing Desktop files stay in iCloud Drive, and macOS creates a new, empty Desktop folder on your Mac (Apple). So if every old screenshot disappeared at once, open iCloud Drive in Finder and look inside its Desktop folder.
If Optimize Mac Storage is also on, older files in iCloud Drive can be kept only in iCloud when your Mac needs space, and they download again when you open them (Apple).
How do I find screenshots with Spotlight?
- Press Command-Space and type
screenshot. - In macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS 27, category filters appear below the search field as you type, and Apple names Screenshot as one example (Apple). Click it to see only screenshots.
- To search every image, start with a kind keyword:
kind:images screenshot(kind:imageworks too). - Select a result and hold Command to locate it in the Finder (Apple).
How do I find screenshots in Finder?
Finder search is better when you want a list you can sort, or a search you can save (Apple):
- Open a Finder window, type
screenshotin the search field, and press Return. - Click the Add (+) button below the search field to add criteria, for example Kind is Image and Name contains "Screenshot".
- Narrow by date with metadata keywords. Apple's own example,
kind:images created:8/16/24, finds images created on one day. - Click Save to keep the search as a Smart Folder, and leave Add To Sidebar selected so your screenshots are one click away from any Finder window.
Can Recents in Finder show my screenshots?
Partly. Apple suggests Recents in the Finder sidebar as an early check when a file is not where you expected (Apple). It is built around when you last opened files, so a screenshot you opened, edited or shared shows up there. Apple menu > Recent Items works the same way (Apple). For one you never opened, use Spotlight, or our guide to finding old screenshots on Mac if you only remember what was in it.
Why aren't my screenshots on the Desktop?
If the checks above came up empty, these are the usual causes:
- The save location was changed. Check Options > Save to.
- Clipboard is selected, or Control was held down.
- Desktop & Documents in iCloud was turned off, leaving older screenshots in iCloud Drive.
- Desktop items are hidden. In System Settings > Desktop & Dock, the Show Items setting controls whether files appear on the desktop at all (Apple).
- Stacks is gathering them into one pile. See Desktop Stacks vs a real screenshot organizer.
- Another app took over the shortcut or moved the files.
Our Mac screenshot not saving guide walks through every fix, including keyboard shortcut settings, permissions and disk space.
Where do CleanShot X, Shottr and other capture apps save?
Third-party capture apps keep their own save location, separate from the macOS setting above, and some take over Shift-Command-4 when you set them up. If you use one, check its preferences for the export folder.
How do I stop worrying about which folder they're in?
We make Pizazoo, so weigh this accordingly. Pizazoo for Mac (macOS 14 Sonoma or later) does not take screenshots. It watches the folders where they land and builds a searchable library from them:
- It watches the system screenshot folder, and you can add others: Downloads, a synced folder, or the export folders of CleanShot X, Shottr or Xnapper.
- New screenshots import automatically, and on-device OCR makes the text inside every screenshot searchable. Both are in the free tier.
- In Settings > Capture, the System Screenshots row has Change Location…, which changes where macOS saves screenshots and keeps Pizazoo watching the new folder.
Pizazoo does not rename files. It lets you find screenshots by what is in them instead. If you are facing a large backlog, read what to do when your Mac screenshots folder has too many files.
