Why Is My Screenshot Blurry? Fixes for iPhone and Mac
Screenshots save at full resolution, so blur comes from iCloud storage-saving copies, compression when sending, low-res screens or zooming. Fixes for each.
A screenshot records your screen at its full resolution, so when one looks blurry, something usually lowered the quality afterwards: iCloud Photos showing a space-saving copy, an app compressing it when you sent it, a lower-density display on a Mac, or zooming into text that was tiny to begin with. Find your cause below; most fixes are one setting or a different way of sending.
Steps are for iOS 27 and macOS 27, with iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26 differences noted.
Why do my screenshots look blurry on my iPhone?
The most common cause is iCloud Photos storage optimization. With Optimize iPhone Storage on, your full-resolution originals live in iCloud and your iPhone keeps space-saving versions, and Apple's iOS 27 guide says the setting is on by default (Apple). When your iPhone needs space, iCloud Photos optimizes the items you open least first (Apple), and old screenshots are prime candidates. Until the original downloads, you are looking at the smaller copy.
How to fix it:
- Open the screenshot and give it a moment online. Originals download over Wi-Fi or cellular (Apple).
- Keep originals on the device (iOS 27). Go to Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, tap iPhone Storage, then tap Download and Keep Originals. In iOS 26 or earlier, the choice is directly on the Photos screen. You need enough free space for your whole library.
- On a Mac, open Photos, choose Photos > Settings, click iCloud, then select Download Originals to this Mac (Apple).
This matters most before you share or crop: send or re-capture a storage-saving copy and the blur travels with it.
Why does my screenshot look blurry when I send it?
Because the app doing the sending shrank it. The usual suspects:
- Text messages (green bubbles). Apple says carriers may set size limits for SMS and MMS attachments and your iPhone "can compress photo and video attachments when necessary" (Apple). Send over iMessage, AirDrop or Mail instead.
- Low Quality Image Mode. Go to Settings, tap Apps, tap Messages. Apple lists the switch as Send Photo Previews or Low Quality Image Mode (Apple). Turn it off to send full-size images.
- Chat and social apps. Most resize and recompress images to save data. Many offer a higher-quality or original-quality option, or let you send the image as a file or document instead of a photo. Check the app's settings or the options in its send screen.
- Mail on iPhone. When you attach large images, Mail can offer Small, Medium, Large or Actual Size; pick Actual Size. Apple's iOS 27 guide doesn't document this choice, so its placement may vary by version (Monge IT).
- Mail on Mac. Apple says Mail inserts images at their actual size by default, and when other sizes are available you choose one from the pop-up menu on the right side of the message header (Apple, macOS 27). Check that it reads Actual Size.
- AirDrop and the share sheet. In Photos, tap the Share button, then Options. Current prevents a file format conversion, while Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG (Apple).
Why are screenshots sent to me blurry?
The sender's app compressed the image before it reached you, and nothing on your end can restore the pixels it dropped. Ask for the original as a file: AirDrop, Mail at Actual Size, or an app's "send as file" option.
Why are my Mac screenshots blurry?
A Mac screenshot captures the pixels your display is drawing, and that depends on the display:
- Retina vs standard displays. macOS measures the screen in points. On a high-resolution (Retina) display each point is backed by four pixels, and the scale factor is either 1.0 or 2.0 depending on the display (Apple Developer). So the same window captured on a standard-density external monitor has half the width and height in pixels it would have on your MacBook's screen. Drag the window to the Retina display before you capture it.
- A non-default resolution. Apple says your Mac automatically uses the best resolution for each display and recommends sticking with it. Check System Settings > Displays, select the display and choose the default (Apple).
- The cable or adapter. An external display falls back to a lower resolution if the video cable or adapter doesn't support its full resolution, or if it's connected through a hub or dock (Apple). Connect it directly to a port on your Mac.
Why does text look blurry when I zoom into a screenshot?
A screenshot holds a fixed number of pixels. If the text was small on screen, each letter may be only a handful of pixels tall, and zooming in just makes those pixels bigger. The fix is to zoom the source before you capture:
- On iPhone, pinch to zoom in on the page or image, then take the screenshot.
- In Safari on Mac, click the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, click Page Zoom and choose a larger size, or pinch open on a trackpad (Apple, macOS 27).
- For a long webpage on iPhone, take the screenshot in Safari and tap Full Page. Apple's iOS 26 guide documents a Save PDF to Files option for these (Apple, iOS 26), and that PDF keeps the page's text selectable and searchable (Cult of Mac), so it stays crisp when you zoom.
Does screenshotting a screenshot lower the quality?
Usually, yes. The second capture records the first one as it appeared on screen: scaled to fit, possibly zoomed, possibly the storage-saving copy from iCloud. Every round trip can soften it. Share the original file instead, and if you only need part of it, crop the original with Markup rather than capturing it again.
Does converting a screenshot to JPEG or HEIC make it blurry?
It can. Your Mac saves screenshots as PNG files by default, and on iPhone the SDR setting uses PNG while HDR uses HEIF (Apple). PNG is lossless. JPEG is not, and it "is not well suited for line drawings and other textual or iconic graphics, where the sharp contrasts between adjacent pixels can cause noticeable artifacts" (Wikipedia). That shows up as fuzzy halos around letters.
- When sharing from Photos, choose Current in the share sheet's Options to avoid an automatic JPEG conversion.
- HDR screenshots need an HDR display to show their full range; on standard displays they appear in SDR (Apple). For screenshots of text you plan to share, SDR (PNG) is the safer choice.
- If someone can't open a HEIC screenshot, convert it to PNG rather than JPEG. Our free image converter does this in your browser (HEIC input works in Safari).
- Need a smaller file on purpose? Use the image compressor, where you set the quality and maximum size yourself instead of letting a chat app decide.
How do I take a high-resolution screenshot?
On iPhone (iOS 26 and iOS 27):
- There is no resolution setting: screenshots capture the full screen. In Settings > General > Screen Capture, choose SDR for text you'll share (Apple).
- Zoom the content first so small text gets more pixels.
- Send the file, not a compressed copy: AirDrop with Current, or Mail at Actual Size.
On Mac (macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS 27):
- Capture on the Retina display at the default resolution.
- For a window, press Shift-Command-4, press the Space bar, then click the window. Hold Option while you click to leave out the shadow (Apple).
- In the Screenshot app (Shift-Command-5), Options includes a capture format on supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. SDR (Most Compatible) saves PNG; HDR saves HEIF (Apple).
- Zoom the page or document before capturing, and send the PNG as a file.
Can you enhance a blurry screenshot?
Only partly, and it helps to know the limits:
- Getting the original beats any enhancement. Download it from iCloud, or ask the sender for the file.
- Sharpening helps slightly soft text. In Photos on Mac, click Edit, then Adjust, then Sharpen, which Apple says makes edges "crisper and better defined" (Apple, macOS 27). It cannot restore letters the pixels never captured.
- AI enhancers invent detail. Duke University's PULSE research, which turns blurry faces into sharp portraits, produces "new faces that don't exist, but look plausibly real" (Duke University). With text, an enhancer can produce confident letters and digits that are wrong. Never trust a number it "recovers".
- If you only need the text, copy it with Live Text (iPhone, Mac) or our free image to text tool, then check every number against the image.
If the blur was added on purpose to hide something, that is a different question: see can blurred screenshots be unblurred.
Where does Pizazoo fit?
Disclosure: we make Pizazoo. It doesn't take screenshots or change how they are captured. It organizes the screenshots you already take on Mac, iPhone and iPad, with on-device text search, so finding the one you took yourself is quicker than re-capturing it or digging a compressed copy out of a chat.
