How to Sync Screenshots Between iPhone, iPad and Mac
Get iPhone screenshots on your Mac and Mac screenshots on your iPhone with iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, AirDrop and more, plus how to keep them organized.
To get iPhone screenshots on your Mac automatically, turn on iCloud Photos on both devices: every screenshot you take on your iPhone or iPad then shows up in Photos on your Mac. The other direction needs one extra step, because Mac screenshots save to the Desktop, not to Photos. Save them to an iCloud Drive folder instead and they appear in the Files app on your iPhone. For a single screenshot right now, AirDrop and Universal Clipboard are faster. And if you want screenshots organized and searchable on every device, not just copied across, Pizazoo iCloud Sync does that through your own private iCloud.
- iPhone or iPad to Mac, automatically: iCloud Photos.
- Mac to iPhone or iPad, automatically: an iCloud Drive screenshot folder.
- One screenshot, right now: AirDrop, Universal Clipboard, or iPhone Mirroring.
- Organized and searchable everywhere: Pizazoo with iCloud Sync.
How do I get my iPhone screenshots on my Mac?
iPhone screenshots live in your photo library (in Photos under Collections, Media Types, Screenshots), so any method that moves photos from iPhone to Mac also moves your screenshots.
Turn on iCloud Photos (automatic)
iCloud Photos keeps your photos and videos in iCloud and in step across your devices, screenshots included.
- On iPhone or iPad: open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, then turn on Sync this iPhone (or Sync this iPad).
- On Mac: open System Settings, click your name, click iCloud, click Photos, then turn on Sync this Mac.
- On every device: sign in with the same Apple Account.
New screenshots then appear in Photos on your Mac once they upload. The first upload can take a while, depending on your library size and internet speed.
The trade-offs: iCloud Photos syncs your entire photo library, not just screenshots, and all of it counts against your iCloud storage. Every account gets 5 GB free, which a real photo library quickly outgrows. Screenshots also stay mixed in with your photos, with no categories. Photos search can match some text inside images, such as an email address or phone number, but it is not built to tell an error message from a boarding pass.
Import over a cable with Photos or Image Capture (manual)
No iCloud Photos? Plug your iPhone into your Mac.
- Photos: connect with a USB cable, unlock your iPhone, and tap Trust if asked. In Photos on the Mac, click Import Selected or Import All New Items.
- Image Capture: select your iPhone under Devices, choose a folder from the Import To menu, then click Download or Download All. It can also delete the originals after import.
Image Capture is the better pick if you want screenshots as plain files in a folder rather than inside a Photos library. Either way it is manual, and you still pick the screenshots out of your camera roll yourself.
Send them with AirDrop (manual, wireless)
Open a screenshot on your iPhone, tap Share, tap AirDrop, then choose your Mac. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and must be within 30 feet (10 meters). On the Mac, received items usually land in Downloads. Great for a handful of screenshots, but it never runs on its own.
Drag and drop with iPhone Mirroring
With iPhone Mirroring you can drag an image from the Photos app on your iPhone straight onto your Mac desktop. It needs macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip, iOS 18 or later, the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication on both, and your iPhone locked and nearby. Apple notes it is currently unavailable in the European Union.
Can Mac screenshots show up on my iPhone automatically?
Yes, but not through Photos. By default, macOS saves screenshots to your Desktop, and Desktop files are not part of your Photos library, so iCloud Photos never sees them. To reach your iPhone on their own, they need to land in iCloud Drive, which your iPhone shows in the Files app.
Option 1: Save screenshots to an iCloud Drive folder
The cleanest setup, because it moves only your screenshots.
- Make sure iCloud Drive is on: System Settings, your name, iCloud, Drive, then turn on Sync this Mac.
- In Finder, create a folder inside iCloud Drive, for example Screenshots.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app, click Options, and below Save to choose Other Location. Pick that folder.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Files, tap Browse, tap iCloud Drive, then open Screenshots.
Prefer Terminal? Apple documents the Options menu route, and this long-standing macOS preference does the same thing (create the folder first):
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location "$HOME/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/Screenshots"
That path is where iCloud Drive lives on your Mac. If new screenshots still land on the Desktop, log out and back in. To undo it, choose Desktop below Save to in the Screenshot app's Options.
The trade-offs: the folder uses iCloud storage, and on iPhone the screenshots sit in Files, not Photos. They arrive as date-stamped files with no categories, so finding one later means scrolling or remembering roughly when you took it.
Option 2: Sync your whole Desktop with Desktop & Documents Folders
If screenshots already pile up on your Desktop, turn on Desktop & Documents Folders (System Settings, your name, iCloud, Drive). They then appear on iPhone under Files, Browse, iCloud Drive, Desktop. The catch is scope: everything on your Desktop and in Documents now uses iCloud storage, not just screenshots.
Option 3: Universal Clipboard for a single screenshot
Add Control to any screenshot shortcut, for example Control-Shift-Command-4, and macOS copies the capture to the clipboard instead of saving a file. Then paste it on your iPhone in Messages, Notes or Mail. It works in reverse too: copy a screenshot on iPhone, press Command-V on your Mac. The devices must be near each other, signed in to the same Apple Account, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Handoff on. The copied item only stays on the clipboard briefly, so paste soon.
AirDrop also works from Mac to iPhone: click the Share button and choose AirDrop, or click AirDrop in the Finder sidebar and drag the file onto your iPhone.
Which method should I use?
| Method | Direction | Automatic or manual | Organizes screenshots | Searchable text | Storage used |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Photos | iPhone and iPad to Mac | Automatic | No, mixed with photos | Partial (Photos search) | iCloud, whole photo library |
| iCloud Drive screenshot folder | Mac to iPhone and iPad | Automatic | No, one folder | No | iCloud, that folder |
| Desktop & Documents Folders | Mac to iPhone and iPad | Automatic | No | No | iCloud, all of Desktop and Documents |
| Photos or Image Capture import | iPhone to Mac | Manual, cable | No | No | Mac disk only |
| AirDrop | Both ways | Manual | No | No | None in iCloud |
| Universal Clipboard | Both ways | Manual, one item | No | No | None |
| iPhone Mirroring | Both ways | Manual drag and drop | No | No | None |
| Pizazoo iCloud Sync | Mac, iPhone and iPad | Automatic once on | Yes, categories and tags | Yes, in the app | Your private iCloud |
A sensible default: iCloud Photos for iPhone to Mac, an iCloud Drive Screenshots folder for Mac to iPhone, and AirDrop or Universal Clipboard when you need one image this second. But if the real problem is that you cannot find screenshots once they arrive, moving them faster will not fix it.
How do I keep screenshots organized on every device?
Every built-in method above moves files. None of them knows that one image is a receipt and another is a stack trace, and none gives you one categorized, searchable screenshot library on both your Mac and your iPhone.
That is the gap Pizazoo fills. The Mac app imports from your macOS screenshot folder, and the iPhone and iPad app organizes the screenshots already in your photo library. With iCloud Sync on, your screenshots, tags, custom categories and saved searches stay in step across Mac, iPhone and iPad through your own private iCloud. There is no Pizazoo server in the middle, and sync is off until you turn it on.
To set it up:
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on each device.
- Update to Pizazoo 1.0.10 or later on Mac (Pizazoo > Check for Updates) and 1.0.4 or later on iPhone or iPad.
- iCloud Sync is a Pro feature, so make sure Pro is active on each device.
- Turn on iCloud Sync in Settings in each app.
A Mac Pro purchase is a one-time $15, $25 or $35 for 1, 3 or 5 Macs, and it includes Pro on the same number of iPhones or iPads. iPhone-only users can buy Pro in the app ($14.99, $24.99 or $34.99). Details are on the pricing page.
- Duplicates after a reinstall: current versions find copies of the same screenshot and merge them automatically.
- Starting over: in the app's iCloud Sync settings, under Start Over, choose Delete iCloud Data. It removes your Pizazoo data from iCloud and turns sync off on all your devices. Screenshots already on each device stay where they are.
The full walkthrough is in Pizazoo sync setup.
Why aren't my screenshots syncing?
Work through the section that matches your setup.
iPhone screenshots are missing from Photos on my Mac
- Check that both devices use the same Apple Account, with Sync this iPhone and Sync this Mac turned on.
- Read the status message in Photos. Syncing pauses in Low Power Mode or Low Data Mode, below 20 percent battery, when the device is too warm, and when iCloud storage is full.
- Connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi and let it sync overnight.
- Do not switch iCloud Photos off to "reset" it. Apple specifically advises against that.
- Update iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
My Mac screenshots are not on my iPhone
- Mac screenshots go to the Desktop, never into Photos. Check where they are going with Shift-Command-5, Options, Save to.
- Confirm iCloud Drive's Sync this Mac is on, then look in Files, Browse, iCloud Drive on your iPhone, not in Photos.
AirDrop or Universal Clipboard is not working
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices and keep them within 30 feet (10 meters).
- On the receiving iPhone, open Control Center, touch and hold the top-left group of controls, tap AirDrop, and choose Contacts Only or Everyone for 10 Minutes.
- For Universal Clipboard, check Handoff. On Mac: System Settings, General, AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff), then turn on Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices. On iPhone: Settings, General, AirPlay & Continuity (or AirPlay & Handoff), then Handoff.
- Install updates and restart both devices.
My Pizazoo library does not match across devices
- Check versions (1.0.10 or later on Mac, 1.0.4 or later on iPhone and iPad), the same Apple Account, Pro active, and iCloud Sync on in each app.
- Moved your Mac screenshot folder, for example into iCloud Drive? Check that Pizazoo's Settings > Capture lists the new folder so the Mac app keeps importing.
- Seeing doubles after a reinstall? Update both apps and they merge automatically.
