Where Are Screenshots on iPhone? How to Find Them (iOS 27)

iPhone screenshots save to Photos under Collections, Media Types, Screenshots. Where to look when one is missing: Files, Hidden, Recently Deleted, iCloud.

Screenshots on iPhone save to the Photos app. In iOS 26 and iOS 27, open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down to Media Types, then tap Screenshots to see every one in one place. If a screenshot is not there, it was most likely saved as a PDF to the Files app, hidden, deleted, or is still waiting for iCloud Photos to sync.

Here is every place a screenshot can end up, in the order worth checking.

Where do screenshots go on iPhone?

By default, into your photo library. Apple's Take a screenshot on iPhone guide (iOS 27) gives the path:

  • Open the Photos app.
  • Tap Collections, scroll down to Media Types, then tap Screenshots.

On iOS 18, which has no Collections tab, you scroll down the single Photos view to Media Types instead.

Two shortcuts help in iOS 27. In the Library, the Media Types filter can show only screenshots. And you can add Screenshots to the Pinned collection so it sits at the top of Collections.

Why is my iPhone Screenshots album missing?

Usually a view setting, not a lost file:

  • Screenshots are hidden from the Library. In iOS 26 and iOS 27, View Options can hide Screenshots, From My Mac and Shared with You items from the main Library. Tap the sort and filter button, tap View Options, then tap Screenshots again to show them (Apple). Hidden this way, they still appear under Media Types.
  • A filter is on. iOS 27 Library filters include Edited, Rating and Captured by Me. Captured by Me shows only what the Camera app shot, so screenshots drop out. Tap Remove Filters to return to the full library.
  • You are viewing one half of a Shared Library. If you use an iCloud Shared Photo Library, tap Collections, tap the profile button, and choose Both Libraries (Apple).

Did the screenshot actually save?

In iOS 26 and iOS 27, a new screenshot opens full screen by default. Apple's iOS 27 guide says to swipe up, or tap the save button and choose an option, to keep it; screenshots shown as small thumbnails save automatically (Apple). If you tapped the delete button instead, nothing was saved.

On Apple Intelligence iPhones, the same full-screen view shows Visual Intelligence tools, with a delete button and a save button at the top.

If you would rather have the old corner thumbnail, go to Settings, tap General, tap Screen Capture, then turn off Full-Screen Previews (Apple).

Where do full-page screenshots go?

Not always to Photos. When you tap Full Page (for example on a long webpage in Safari), Apple's iOS 26 guide lists two save choices: Save to Photos keeps it as an image, and Save PDF to Files saves a PDF to a location you pick (Apple, iOS 26). iOS 18 offered the same pair after tapping Done, and the iOS 27 guide keeps the Full Page option.

To find a PDF you saved, open the Files app and type its name or "PDF" in the search field, or tap Recents (Apple).

What if you shared the screenshot instead of saving it?

The screenshot editor has separate Share and Save buttons (Apple, iOS 26). If you sent a screenshot from the editor and then deleted it, the only copy is wherever you sent it: the Messages thread, the note or the email.

Screenshots other people send you are not in your library until you save them. Images you save from Messages, Safari or Mail, and anything received by AirDrop, appear in the Recently Saved collection (Collections, below Pinned).

Organizer apps can move screenshots too. Pizazoo for iPhone, for example (we make Pizazoo), has a "Remove from Photos after import" setting and a "Remove from Photos" toggle in its "Save to Pizazoo" share sheet. With either on, Pizazoo asks before removing anything, then moves the original to Recently Deleted; the screenshot itself lives on in Pizazoo.

Is it in Hidden or Recently Deleted?

  • Hidden: hidden photos appear only in the Hidden collection. Tap Collections, tap Hidden (below Utilities), tap View Album, unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode, then tap the screenshot, tap the More button and tap Unhide. If the Hidden collection is missing, turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings, Apps, Photos (Apple).
  • Recently Deleted: deleted items stay for 30 days. Tap Collections, tap Recently Deleted (below Utilities), tap View Album, unlock, tap Select, choose the screenshots, tap the More button, then tap Recover (Apple).

With iCloud Photos on, hiding or deleting on one device hides or deletes everywhere.

Is iCloud Photos still syncing?

A screenshot taken on your iPad or another iPhone shows up only after it syncs. In Photos, tap Collections and look at the top-right corner: a yellow badge means syncing is paused, a red exclamation mark means iCloud storage is full, and a partially filled blue circle means photos are uploading. Tap your account for details and the last sync time. In iOS 27 you can also tap Sync Immediately, then For Today (Apple).

Apple notes that Low Power Mode, Low Data Mode, a low battery and a full iCloud account all pause syncing, and advises not to turn iCloud Photos off, because that restarts the process (Apple). Every device also needs Sync this iPhone (or iPad) turned on with the same Apple Account (Apple).

Screenshots taken on a Mac are different: they save to the Mac desktop by default, not to Photos (Apple). See how to sync screenshots between iPhone and Mac.

How do you find a screenshot by the text in it?

Tap the search button in Photos and type a word you remember. Apple lists text, such as an email address or phone number, among the things Photos search can find, and suggests adding a media type to the search to narrow it (Apple). On iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and later models with Apple Intelligence, you can also describe the image in plain language.

If text search is how you find screenshots every day, a dedicated app helps. Pizazoo for iPhone and iPad (we make it) runs on-device OCR on the screenshots in your photo library, sorts them into categories automatically, and shows results in Spotlight (Siri can also open a search in the app). It is free on iOS and iPadOS 17 or later. More in how to search text inside screenshots on iPhone and whether the iOS 27 Photos app is enough.

Quick checklist: where is my screenshot?

Where to look When it is there
Photos: Collections, Media Types, Screenshots Default for every saved screenshot
Files app You saved a full-page screenshot as a PDF
Hidden collection You hid it
Recently Deleted You deleted it in the last 30 days
Recently Saved You saved it from Messages, Safari, Mail or AirDrop
Your other device iCloud Photos sync is paused, off, or full
