How to Find Old Screenshots on iPhone (iOS 27)
Track down one old screenshot on iPhone: search Photos by text or date, sort Screenshots oldest first, try Spotlight or Siri, and check Files and Messages.
To find an old screenshot on iPhone, search for a word you remember from it. Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Media Types, tap Screenshots, then tap the Search button and type that word: Photos reads the text inside images, and searching from inside the collection keeps your camera photos out of the results. If you only remember roughly when you took it, sort the same collection Oldest First and scroll to that period.
This guide is about tracking down one specific screenshot from months or years ago, with steps for iOS 27 and iOS 26. If you only need to know where screenshots are saved, see where are screenshots on iPhone.
Which method fits what you remember?
| What you remember | Where to start |
|---|---|
| A word, number or name that was in it | Photos search, or Spotlight from the Home Screen |
| Roughly when you took it | The Screenshots collection sorted Oldest First, or a month and year search |
| The app or website it came from | Search that name as text |
| What it looked like | A plain-language description (Apple Intelligence) or Siri AI |
| That you sent it to someone | The Photos tab of that Messages conversation |
| That it was a long, full-page capture | A PDF search in the Files app |
How do I search my screenshots by the text in them?
Photos search reads text in your images. Apple's iOS 27 guide lists "Text (an email address or phone number, for example)" among the things you can search for, next to dates, places, business names, named people and captions (Apple). The same guide says you can search inside a specific album or collection, which is the trick for screenshots:
- Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down, tap Media Types, then tap Screenshots (Apple).
- Tap the Search button and type what you remember.
- Tap a suggestion, then swipe up to browse the results. To sort them, tap the Sort and Filter button and choose Captured (date taken) or Added.
Search for the rarest thing you remember: an order number, a surname, an error code or a street name finds one screenshot, while a word like "payment" finds hundreds. On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 or later), you can also describe the screenshot in plain language (Apple). How do I find a screenshot from a specific month or year?
You have two good options and one trap.
- Search the date. Apple lists "Date (month or year)" as a search term, so typing "March 2024" inside the Screenshots collection narrows it to that month (Apple).
- Sort the collection. In the Screenshots collection, tap the Sort and Filter button, tap Sort By, then tap Oldest First or Newest First (Apple), and scroll toward the date. Starting from the right end saves a lot of scrolling when the screenshot is several years old.
- The trap: Years and Months. Swiping down on the library grid shows Years and Months views, but Apple says they are curated to show your best shots, and "screenshots, whiteboards, and receipts aren't shown." Tap All to see everything (Apple). Scrolling Years looking for a screenshot will never find it.
For something from the last few days, tap Collections and scroll to Recent Days. Opening a day shows a summary, so tap Show All to see every item (Apple).
Can I find a screenshot by the app or website it came from?
Only through what was visible on screen. iPhone screenshots don't record which app they came from: a published ExifTool readout of an iPhone screenshot shows the capture date, pixel size, a color profile and a "Screenshot" label, with no app name and no GPS (ExifTool output on GitHub).
So search for the words the app showed: the website address in Safari's address bar, the app's name in a header, a chat partner's name at the top of a conversation, or the store name on an order confirmation. Apple also lists business names as a search category (Apple).
Can I search screenshots by place or by person?
Place search rarely finds screenshots, whatever some guides suggest. Photos searches by city or state using the location stored with each item, and Apple explains that location data is added to photos and videos when the Camera app has access to Location Services (Apple Personal Safety). Screenshots aren't taken with the Camera, so a place search only finds a screenshot if the place name is written in it (a map, a hotel booking) or if you added a location yourself.
People search works for people and pets you have named in Photos (Apple). Apple doesn't say whether faces inside screenshots are always grouped, so if the name alone fails, search it as text too: it may appear in a chat header or a contact card.
Can Spotlight or Siri find an old screenshot?
- Spotlight: tap the Search button on the Home Screen (on models with Face ID) or swipe down on the Home Screen, then type. Apple says Spotlight can search "text in your photos using Live Text" and find images in your photo library (Apple). If Photos never shows up, go to Settings > Search, tap Photos and make sure Show App in Search is on.
- Siri AI (Beta), iOS 27: Apple says Siri AI can search your photos, and suggests requests like "Find photos from my trip to Lisbon." It runs on Apple Intelligence iPhones (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 or later), in English to start, and not initially in the EU. Turn it on in Settings > Siri with Try Siri AI (Beta) (Apple).
On older versions, Apple's guides don't describe Siri finding photos, so use Photos search instead.
Why can't I find a screenshot I know I took?
If none of the searches above finds it, check these in order:
- Hidden: tap Collections, then Hidden below Utilities, and unlock it (Apple).
- Recently Deleted: deleted screenshots stay there for 30 days (Apple). Past that, see how to recover deleted screenshots.
- A hidden view setting: in iOS 26 and iOS 27, View Options can hide screenshots from the Library; tap the Sort and Filter button to check (Apple). The iOS 27 Captured by Me filter shows only what the Camera app shot, so screenshots drop out while it is on (9to5Mac); tap Remove Filters.
- The other half of a Shared Library: in Collections, tap the Layout and Reorder button and choose Both Libraries (Apple).
- Recently Viewed: if you opened the screenshot lately, it may be in Recently Viewed below Utilities (Apple).
What if the screenshot never made it to Photos?
Some screenshots never enter your photo library at all:
- Saved as a PDF: a full-page screenshot saved with Save PDF to Files lives in the Files app (Apple, iOS 26). Open Files and search for a word from its name or "PDF," or tap Recents (Apple).
- Sent and then deleted: open the Messages conversation, tap the contact or group icon at the top, swipe left, then tap Photos (Apple). Photos sent to you by people in your contacts also show up in Shared with You.
- Saved from another app: images saved from Messages, Safari or Mail, and anything received by AirDrop, collect in Recently Saved (Apple).
Is it different on iPad?
Barely. In iPadOS 27, tap Collections, scroll down, tap Media Types, then Screenshots (Apple). Photos uses a sidebar on iPad, and the setting that hides screenshots from the library sits under the More button, then View Options (Apple).
How do I make screenshots easier to find next time?
- Caption the ones that matter. Open a screenshot and swipe up: the caption field is meant to "make it easier to find in Search" (Apple).
- Pin Screenshots. Add the Screenshots collection to Pinned so it sits at the top of Collections (Apple).
- Use an organizer if you search screenshots every week. Disclosure: we make Pizazoo. Pizazoo for iPhone and iPad is free on iOS 17 or later. It sorts the screenshots in your photo library into categories such as Receipts, Chats and Errors on your device, and its on-device text search adds filters like
cat:anddate:. Results also appear in iOS Spotlight, and saying "Search Pizazoo" to Siri opens the app on your search. It picks up new screenshots when you open it. More in how to organize screenshots on iPhone.
