iPhone Screenshot Not Working? 11 Fixes (iOS 27)

iPhone screenshot not working, black or not in Photos? Fix button timing, the iOS 27 preview, storage, Full Page, blocked apps and random screenshots.

9 min read

If your iPhone won't take a screenshot, check the technique first: quickly press and release the side button and the volume up button at the same moment (the side button and Home button on an iPhone with Touch ID). Holding them too long brings up the power-off sliders instead. If the screenshot does appear but never shows up in Photos, the usual culprit in iOS 26 and iOS 27 is the full-screen preview: tapping its Close button throws the screenshot away.

The fixes below cover those two, then storage, iCloud, black screenshots, missing Full Page, blocked devices, and screenshots your iPhone takes on its own. Steps follow Apple's guides for iOS 27 and iOS 26.

Fix 1: Are you pressing the right buttons the right way?

Apple's iOS 27 guide gives two combinations (Apple):

  • iPhone with Face ID: quickly press and release the side button and the volume up button at the same time.
  • iPhone with a Home button: quickly press and release the Home button and the side button at the same time.

The word that matters is quickly. On a Face ID iPhone, pressing and holding the side button with either volume button opens the power-off sliders (Apple). If one button lands a fraction early, you get that button's own action instead: the screen locks, the volume changes, or you go to the Home Screen. Press both together and let go. A thick or tight case can make the two buttons hard to press at once, so test once without it. Our guide to taking a screenshot on iPhone covers every model.

Fix 2: Did the full-screen preview discard your screenshot?

In iOS 26 and iOS 27, a new screenshot opens full screen by default, and it is not saved until you act on it. Apple's iOS 27 guide says to swipe up, or tap the Selected button (the checkmark) and choose an option, to save it; the Close button cancels or deletes it. Screenshots shown as thumbnails save automatically (Apple). In iOS 26 you save with the same checkmark button (Apple, iOS 26).

The Close button sits at the top left, where earlier versions put the Done button, so habit makes people tap it and lose the shot (The Mac Observer).

To get the old behavior back, go to Settings > General > Screen Capture and turn off Full-Screen Previews (Apple). Screenshots then appear as a small thumbnail and save on their own. See how to turn off the screenshot preview on iPhone. If you already discarded one, check Recently Deleted, then read how to recover deleted screenshots.

Fix 3: Is the screenshot saved but hidden in Photos?

Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down to Media Types, then tap Screenshots (Apple). If it is there but not in your Library, a view setting is hiding it:

  • View Options: in iOS 26 and iOS 27 you can hide screenshots from the Library. Tap the Sort and Filter button, tap View Options, then tap Screenshots to show them again (Apple).
  • A filter: the iOS 27 Captured by Me filter shows only Camera shots, so screenshots disappear while it is on (9to5Mac). Tap Remove Filters.
  • A Shared Library: switch the view to Both Libraries (Apple).

Fix 4: Is your iPhone storage full?

Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see what is using space and Apple's recommendations; a "Storage Almost Full" alert means it is time to remove videos or apps (Apple). Apple doesn't describe what happens to screenshots on a full iPhone, but iGeeksBlog warns that with less than 1 GB free, "new screenshots may not save" (iGeeksBlog). Old screenshots are often part of the problem; see do screenshots take up storage.

Fix 5: Is iCloud Photos still syncing?

If the screenshot is on your iPhone but missing on your iPad or Mac, syncing is probably paused. Apple lists Low Data Mode, Low Power Mode, a battery below 20 percent, overheating and full iCloud storage as reasons. Check the status in Photos (tap Collections, then the profile button), and don't turn iCloud Photos off, because that restarts syncing (Apple). For getting screenshots between devices, see how to sync screenshots between iPhone and Mac.

Fix 6: Why is my iPhone screenshot black?

Because the app on screen is protecting its content. It isn't a fault, and there is no setting on your side to change it.

  • Streaming video: movies and shows protected with Apple's FairPlay DRM appear black in screenshots. An Apple engineer described it as "a security enhancement in iOS 10 to protect FPS content" (Apple Developer Forums).
  • Banking and payment apps: iOS gives apps no switch to block screenshots. For screenshots, Apple's developer documentation offers apps a notification that "posts after the screenshot is taken", not a way to stop one (Apple Developer). Apps that want sensitive screens kept out use a workaround, such as drawing the screen inside a secure text field, the same protection that keeps password fields out of captures (Apple Developer Forums). The result is a blank or black image.
  • Screen recordings and mirroring: apps can also detect when the screen is being recorded, mirrored or sent over AirPlay, and hide content while that is happening (Apple Developer).

If you need a record from such an app, use its own share, download or statement feature.

Fix 7: Why is Full Page missing from my iPhone screenshot?

Full Page only appears when the app can supply the whole page. Apple's example is a webpage in Safari (Apple), and apps have to add support through Apple's screenshot service, which hands iOS a PDF version of their content (Apple Developer). Many apps don't, so the option simply isn't there.

Two more things to check:

  • You need the editor open. With Full-Screen Previews off, tap the thumbnail in the lower-left corner before it disappears, then tap Full Page.
  • You may have saved it somewhere else. In iOS 26, a full-page screenshot offers Save to Photos or Save PDF to Files (Apple, iOS 26). A PDF goes to the Files app, not Photos.

Fix 8: Is your iPhone managed or locked to one app?

  • Work or school device management: organizations can turn on a restriction called Screenshots and screen recordings, under which "users can't save a screenshot or recording of the screen." It works on iOS 5 and later, and the device doesn't need to be supervised (Apple Platform Deployment). Look in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for installed profiles (Apple), and ask your IT team if you find one.
  • Guided Access: a Guided Access session can turn off the side and volume buttons. Triple-click the side button (or Home button) and enter the passcode to end it (Apple).
  • Screen Time: Apple's parental controls guide doesn't list a screenshot restriction; its Screen Recording switch sits with the Game Center settings (Apple). Screen Time is an unlikely cause.

Fix 9: Is a button broken?

If the side or volume button no longer clicks, take screenshots without it. AssistiveTouch has a Take a screenshot action (Apple), Back Tap can take one when you tap the back of the iPhone (Apple), and Siri works too. Setup for each is in how to take a screenshot on iPhone without buttons.

Fix 10: Have you restarted your iPhone?

A restart clears most one-off glitches. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the sliders appear, then drag the power-off slider; or go to Settings > General > Shut Down (Apple). If the iPhone is unresponsive, force restart it: press and quickly release volume up, then volume down, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears (Apple).

Fix 11: Is iOS up to date?

Back up first, then go to Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install if an update is listed (Apple).

Why is my iPhone taking screenshots by itself?

Something is triggering a screenshot shortcut. Check these, most likely first:

  • Back Tap: a double or triple tap on the back of the iPhone, including an accidental bump, can take a screenshot. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap, tap Double Tap and Triple Tap, and choose None (Apple).
  • AssistiveTouch: its menu button can run an action on a single tap, double tap or long press. In Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch, check those three, or turn AssistiveTouch off (Apple).
  • The Action button: if it runs a screenshot shortcut, pressing and holding it by accident in a pocket or bag triggers it. Go to Settings > Action Button and swipe to another action (Apple).
  • Pocket and case presses: the side and volume up buttons squeezed together count as a screenshot; a tight case or a full pocket can do it (Apple Community).
  • A Shortcuts automation: open the Shortcuts app and tap Automation to see which shortcuts run on their own (Apple).

To clear out the accidental ones, see how to delete all screenshots on iPhone at once.

Is screenshot on iPad not working for the same reasons?

Mostly, with a few differences (Apple):

  • Buttons: press and release the top button and either volume button; on an iPad with a Home button, press the Home and top buttons.
  • Apple Pencil: swipe up diagonally from a lower corner of the screen. What each corner does is set in Settings > Apps > Notes > Corner Gestures. If your iPad takes screenshots when a finger brushes a corner, turn off Allow Finger to Swipe from Corner there, or Swipe Finger from Corner in Settings > Multitasking & Gestures (Apple).
  • No Back Tap: Apple lists Back Tap for iPhone 8 or later (Apple), so on iPad use AssistiveTouch or Siri instead.
  • Same preview choice: iPad also lets you show screenshots full screen or as thumbnails, and the same discard rule applies.

What should I do with all those screenshots once they work?

Once screenshots work again, they pile up. Pizazoo for iPhone and iPad is free on iOS and iPadOS 17 or later. Disclosure: we make Pizazoo. It sorts the screenshots in your photo library into categories on your device and makes the text inside them searchable. See how to organize screenshots on iPhone.
