Mac Screenshot Not Saving or Working? 10 Fixes to Try
Mac screenshots not saving to the Desktop, or Shift-Command-4 doing nothing? Check the save location, Clipboard, iCloud, shortcuts, permissions and more.
When a screenshot on your Mac seems not to save, it is usually saving somewhere else: to the clipboard, to a different folder, or to a Desktop that now lives in iCloud Drive. Press Shift-Command-5, click Options, and check what is selected under Save to before anything else. If nothing happens at all when you press Shift-Command-4, the later fixes cover keyboard shortcuts, permissions, disk space and managed Macs. The steps apply to macOS Tahoe 26 and macOS 27 (Golden Gate); older names are noted where they differ.
Which fix do I need?
| What you see | Likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| A thumbnail appears, but no file on the Desktop | Save location changed, or the Desktop is in iCloud | Fixes 1, 4 and 5 |
| No file anywhere, but Command-V pastes the screenshot | Clipboard selected, or Control held | Fix 2 |
| The file appears a few seconds late | Floating thumbnail or Timer | Fix 3 |
| Shift-Command-4 does nothing, Shift-Command-5 works | Shortcut turned off or reassigned | Fix 6 |
| A third-party capture app will not capture | Screen recording permission | Fix 7 |
| Nothing works on a work or school Mac | Device management restriction | Fix 10 |
| Old screenshots vanished from the Desktop | iCloud Desktop turned off, or an app moved them | Fix 4 and the organizer note |
Fix 1: Are screenshots saving to a different folder?
The Desktop is only the default. Apple's Take a screenshot on Mac article notes that you can change the save location in the Screenshot app's Options menu, and the keyboard shortcuts follow it.
- Press Shift-Command-5 and click Options.
- Below Save to, see which item is checked. If it is a folder, open it in Finder and your screenshots should be there.
- To go back to the Desktop, choose Desktop.
If a custom folder was renamed, deleted, or lives on a drive that is not connected, choose a folder again. Our guides to where screenshots go on Mac and changing the screenshot location cover this in depth, including the Terminal setting some tutorials use.
Fix 2: Is Clipboard selected?
If Clipboard is checked under Save to, macOS never writes a file. The same happens for a single screenshot when you hold Control with the usual keys, for example Control-Shift-Command-4 (Apple). Try pasting with Command-V into a note or email: if the screenshot appears, it went to the clipboard. Choose a folder under Save to, and keep your finger off Control.
Fix 3: Is the floating thumbnail delaying the save?
With Show Floating Thumbnail on, the thumbnail sits in the bottom-right corner for a few seconds, and Apple says the file is saved after that (Mac User Guide). Hovering over it keeps it on screen longer. Swipe it right to save at once, or turn the thumbnail off in Options; see how to turn off the screenshot preview on Mac.
Also check Timer in the same menu. A 5 or 10 second timer delays the capture itself, which can look like a screenshot that never happened. Set it to None.
Fix 4: Is your Desktop stored in iCloud?
With Desktop & Documents Folders on (System Settings, your name, iCloud, Drive), your Desktop is stored in iCloud Drive (Apple). Screenshots still save there, and in macOS Tahoe 26 or later you will find that Desktop in the Finder sidebar under Favorites, with a cloud icon.
- Turned it off recently? Apple says your existing files stay in iCloud Drive and macOS creates new, empty Desktop and Documents folders on your Mac (Apple). Your older screenshots are in iCloud Drive, inside its Desktop folder.
- iCloud storage full? Apple says a document that cannot be saved to iCloud Drive stays on your Mac and uploads when space becomes available (Apple). Screenshots will then be missing on your other devices, not on the Mac.
Fix 5: Are Desktop items hidden?
Files can be saved to the Desktop folder yet not shown on the desktop. Open System Settings, click Desktop & Dock, and under Desktop & Stage Manager check Show Items. Apple explains that with this option off, desktop items are hidden until you click the desktop (Apple). Select On Desktop.
If your screenshots collapse into a single pile instead, that is Desktop Stacks; see Desktop Stacks vs a real screenshot organizer.
Fix 6: Why is Command-Shift-4 not working?
If Shift-Command-5 still opens the Screenshot controls but Shift-Command-3 or Shift-Command-4 does nothing, the shortcut itself is the problem:
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Keyboard, click Keyboard Shortcuts, then click Screenshots in the sidebar. Make sure each shortcut is checked (Mac User Guide).
- To return every shortcut to its original keys, click Restore Defaults (Apple).
- A warning icon next to a shortcut means it conflicts with another one; double-click it to assign different keys (Apple).
- Capture apps such as CleanShot X or Shottr can take over these shortcuts. If you installed one, check its settings.
In macOS Monterey 12 and earlier, the path is System Preferences, Keyboard, Shortcuts, Screenshots.
Fix 7: Does a third-party screenshot app have permission?
Third-party capture apps need permission to record your screen. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Privacy & Security, then Screen & System Audio Recording, and turn the app on (Apple). Older versions of macOS call this setting Screen Recording. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen the app, do so.
Fix 8: Is your disk full?
A nearly full startup disk can stop new files from being saved, screenshots included. In macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings, click General, then Storage to see what is using space; in earlier versions, use About This Mac > Storage (Apple). Empty the Trash, since deleted files keep using space until you do.
Fix 9: Will restarting SystemUIServer or the Mac help?
If settings look right but captures still fail, restart the processes behind them:
- Open Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities), select SystemUIServer, click the Stop button in the upper-left corner, then choose Quit (Apple). macOS restarts it automatically.
- Or run
killall SystemUIServerin Terminal. - If that does not help, choose Apple menu > Restart (Apple).
Fix 10: Is your Mac managed by work or school?
Organizations can block screenshots entirely. Apple's device management restrictions for Mac include a Screenshots and screen recordings restriction (macOS 10.14.4 and later) under which users cannot save a screenshot or recording of the screen (Apple Platform Deployment). To see whether profiles are installed, open System Settings, click General, then Device Management (Apple). If you find one, ask your IT team.
Can an app block screenshots of its window?
Yes. Apple notes that some apps, such as the Apple TV app, might not let you take screenshots of their windows (Apple). If only one app fails, that is likely the reason.
Could an organizer app be moving your screenshots?
Screenshot organizers, cloud uploaders and sync tools can move or delete originals by design. We make Pizazoo, a Mac screenshot organizer, and it has exactly such a setting: with Delete originals after import on in Settings > Capture, Pizazoo permanently deletes each original from the source folder once it is imported. The screenshot then lives in Pizazoo's library, searchable by the text inside it, but it disappears from your Desktop. Turn the setting off if you want files to stay where macOS saves them. Pizazoo does not take screenshots or change the screenshot keyboard shortcuts.
