What's New for Screenshots in macOS 27 Golden Gate
macOS 27 keeps the screenshot shortcuts you know. What is new: Visual Intelligence on Mac, a Shortcuts screenshot trigger, and Finder and Photos extras.
macOS 27 Golden Gate, which Apple released on September 14, 2026, does not change how you take a screenshot. Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4 and the Shift-Command-5 Screenshot app work as they did in macOS 26 Tahoe, and files still save to the Desktop. The new parts sit around the capture: Visual Intelligence lets Siri answer questions about a window or area of your screen, and Shortcuts adds a "When a screenshot is saved" trigger that can file every new screenshot automatically.
Still on Tahoe? Our macOS Tahoe screenshot guide covers that release. This post covers only what is different in macOS 27.
What changed for screenshots in macOS 27?
| macOS 26 Tahoe | macOS 27 Golden Gate | |
|---|---|---|
| Key combos and Screenshot app options | Shift-Command-3, 4 and 5; Save to, Timer, Floating Thumbnail, Capture Format | Unchanged in Apple's guide |
| HDR screenshots | HDR option saves HEIF on supported Macs | Same |
| Spotlight "Screenshot" filter | Yes | Yes, plus Siri AI in Spotlight |
| Ask about what is on screen | Not on Mac | Visual Intelligence with Siri AI (beta) |
| Shortcuts automation | Folder trigger | New "When a screenshot is saved" trigger |
| File names | Rename by hand | Siri can suggest names in Finder |
| Photos for Mac | Media Types > Screenshots | Adds Captured by Me and star ratings |
Did the Screenshot app change in macOS 27?
Not according to Apple. The macOS 27 edition of the Mac User Guide's screenshot page matches the Tahoe edition: the Options menu still covers Save to, Timer, Show Floating Thumbnail, Remember Last Selection, Show Mouse Pointer and Capture Format (Apple: Mac User Guide).
If you skipped Tahoe, Capture Format is the option to know. On supported Macs, SDR (Most Compatible) saves PNG files and HDR saves HEIF files (Apple). You need an HDR display to see the difference.
To find or move your files, see where screenshots go on Mac and how to change the screenshot location. If the floating thumbnail delays saves, turn off the screenshot preview.
One reported addition: 9to5Mac describes a Visual Intelligence button in the Shift-Command-5 toolbar. Apple's guide does not list it, so the keyboard shortcuts below are the documented route.
How do you ask Siri about a screenshot on a Mac?
This is the biggest screenshot-related change. Visual Intelligence is new to the Mac (MacRumors), and Apple says that with Siri AI (Beta) turned on you can ask Siri about what is on your screen (Apple, Apple: macOS 27 notes):
- Press Command-Shift-Space bar to select the active window.
- Press Command-Shift-6, then drag to select a portion of the screen.
- Type a question in the Ask Siri field, click a suggested action, or click Image Search to find similar images online (Apple: Siri AI and your Mac screen).
Siri AI is in beta and needs MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) or a Mac with M1 or later, with Siri and device language set to a supported language, English to start. Usage limits may apply.
Apple describes asking, acting and searching, not saving a file, so keep using Shift-Command-4 when you want a screenshot to keep.
Can Spotlight find screenshots in macOS 27?
Yes. The category filter that arrived in Tahoe is still there: open Spotlight with Command-Space bar, start typing, and click Screenshot below the search field (Apple). Press Space bar on a result for Quick Look, or hold Command to locate it in the Finder (Apple).
With Siri AI on, Spotlight is also where Siri conversations start, and Apple says search across Spotlight, Photos and Mail is "more stable, efficient, and comprehensive" (Apple Newsroom).
What is new in Shortcuts for screenshots?
Apple's list of Shortcuts changes for the 27 releases includes several that touch screenshots (Apple: New in Shortcuts 27):
- A Screenshot trigger, "When a screenshot is saved," on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
- Extract Text From Image can now pull tables or lists out of an image.
- Scan QR or Barcode can process a file directly, so a saved screenshot of a QR code works.
- Automations live inside shortcuts. On a Mac, open a shortcut, click Edit, then Automation, and choose a trigger (Apple).
Apple also says an automation sends a notification asking you to run it when its event occurs, and that automations sync to your other devices disabled (Apple). On Tahoe, the closest option is the Folder trigger (Apple: Shortcuts 26).
Automate screenshots with the new Shortcuts trigger
This shortcut moves each new screenshot off the Desktop into a Screenshots folder. Apple does not document what the trigger hands to the shortcut, so the shortcut finds the newest file itself. Filter Files with its Sort by and Limit options is in Apple's guide (Apple); Get Contents of Folder and Move File are in Matthew Cassinelli's action directory.
- In Shortcuts, create a new shortcut, click Edit, then Automation, and choose Screenshot ("When a screenshot is saved").
- Add Get Contents of Folder and pick the folder your screenshots save to (the Desktop unless you changed it).
- Add Filter Files with a Name filter that matches "Screenshot", sort by Creation Date with the newest first, and turn on Limit with 1 item. That picks the file that just arrived.
- Add Move File and choose the destination, such as a Screenshots folder in Pictures. Leave Replace Existing Files off.
- Optionally finish with Show Notification to confirm it ran (Apple).
To rename instead, put Rename File before Move File and build the name with Format Date, keeping the time down to the second so names never collide. Our guide to renaming screenshots on Mac covers Finder batch renames too.
For a searchable text log, swap Move File for Extract Text From Image and Append Text to Note, which can now add text to a specific section of a note (Apple).
Test on a folder of copies first. Apple does not say whether the trigger fires for third-party capture apps, so check it with yours. If you only want a different folder, changing the save location is simpler, and for scheduled cleanups see how to delete screenshots on Mac.
What else changed around screenshots?
- File name suggestions. MacStories describes Siri suggesting names from a file's content when you highlight its name, including in save dialogs. Six Colors would like it applied to auto-generated names like screenshots, so for now it is file by file.
- Photos for Mac. A Captured by Me collection shows only photos you took on your iPhone, Utilities adds identity documents, and you can filter by star rating (Apple, Apple). Mac screenshots save to the Desktop, not Photos, so this mostly helps with iPhone screenshots.
- Live Text is unchanged. Copying text from a screenshot in Preview works as it did in Tahoe (Apple).
- Apple silicon only. macOS 27 does not run on Intel Macs (Apple), and MacRumors notes it is the last major release with general-purpose Rosetta support, which matters if an old Intel-only screenshot utility is part of your setup.
Where does Pizazoo fit on macOS 27?
We make Pizazoo. It organizes screenshots; it does not take them. It runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, through macOS 27:
- Any capture tool. Pizazoo watches folders, so screenshots from Shift-Command-4, CleanShot X, Shottr or Xnapper end up in one library. If a shortcut moves screenshots somewhere new, add that folder as a watched folder.
- Search by what is inside. On-device Apple Vision OCR makes the text in every screenshot searchable (free), and on-device AI sorts them into categories such as Code, Receipts, Chats and Errors.
- Capture settings. Settings > Capture has "Hide macOS screenshot thumbnail preview", and the System Screenshots folder row has a Change Location… button that changes where macOS saves screenshots and keeps Pizazoo watching the new folder.
- No renaming. Pizazoo leaves file names alone, so a rename shortcut works alongside it.
Download Pizazoo to try it on macOS 27.
