Source screenshots you can find, cite and protect.
A screenshot is often the only record of a page that has since changed, and it is only useful if you can find it again and say where it came from. Pizazoo keeps that archive searchable and private, on your Mac and your iPhone.
TL;DR: Researchers and journalists screenshot sources constantly: web pages that may change, posts that may be deleted, documents and messages. Pizazoo reads the text in every capture on-device, files it by content, and finds it by a name, quote or figure. Keep the URL and date in a note, tag by project, and redact before sharing.
Sound familiar?
- Pages and posts change or disappear after you capture them, and the screenshot carries no URL
- Hundreds of source captures named by timestamp, with the quote you need hidden in one of them
- Material for one story or paper mixed in with everything else in the camera roll
- Sensitive sources, documents and private messages that cannot go through a cloud AI service
- Names, numbers and faces that must be hidden before a capture goes to an editor or co-author
How Pizazoo fits
- Capture with any tool. Use Shift-Command-3, 4 or 5, CleanShot X or Shottr on Mac, or the usual buttons on iPhone. Pizazoo watches the save folders you choose on Mac. On iPhone, Save to Pizazoo in the share sheet files an image from any app with a category, tags and a note.
- Record provenance. Pizazoo does not capture the page URL for you, so paste the URL, the date and any context into the screenshot’s note. For anything you may need to prove later, also save the page to a web archive such as the Wayback Machine and keep that link in the note.
- Search by text. On-device text recognition (OCR) indexes every capture, so a name, a quoted phrase, a figure or an account handle finds the screenshot. On iPhone, results also appear in Spotlight.
- Organize by project (Pro). Color tags and saved searches turn a story or study into a living collection, and unlimited custom categories let you file by beat, project or chapter.
- Redact before sharing. On Mac, redact, blur or pixelate by hand, or use auto-redaction for personal information and QR codes. On iPhone, blur or black out. For text that must stay hidden, a solid redaction is safer than blur.
- Read foreign-language sources. On Mac, the Translate button in the full-size preview overlays translated text on the original and detects the source language automatically. The iPhone markup editor includes translate too.
Common questions
FAQ
Does Pizazoo record the URL of the page I screenshotted?
No. Pizazoo organizes image files and does not know which page an image came from. Add the URL and capture date to the screenshot’s note on Mac or iPhone, or type them into the note field when you use Save to Pizazoo from the iPhone share sheet.
Is a screenshot enough to show what a page said?
Often not on its own, because screenshots are easy to edit and easy to dispute. Record the URL and date, and save an independent copy, for example with the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now, which gives you a permanent link to the page as it was. Pizazoo keeps your screenshots findable; it does not certify them.
Do my sources and screenshots leave my device?
Not for processing. Text recognition and categorization run on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. There is no Pizazoo account, no ads and no Pizazoo server. iCloud Sync is optional (Pro), off by default, and runs through your own private iCloud.
How should I cite a screenshot in a paper or article?
Cite the original source and the date you captured it, not the screenshot as a separate work. APA, MLA and Chicago each have a format for the reference and for the caption under the image; see /blog/how-to-cite-a-screenshot for worked examples.
What does it cost for a team?
Each person runs their own library. The iPhone and iPad app is free, and the Mac app has a free tier. Pro is a one-time purchase: $15, $25 or $35 for 1, 3 or 5 Macs, each plan including Pro on the same number of iPhones or iPads. There is no subscription.
